Amazon Kindle
Available now, $360
When Amazon's electronic reader was released last November, it was a bit like a mewling, newborn baby. It was new, it had enormous potential--but it wasn't exactly pretty. The Kindle's electronic ink screen is easy to read in any light, at any angle. Because it reflects ambient light (rather than projecting light), hours of immersive reading won't tire your eyes. That reflective quality, however, means that it can't achieve a brightness level above a dingy gray. The Kindle doesn't display color, and the screen takes about a second to refresh, making animation impossible. All that adds up to a gadget that falls flat as a finished product, but still represents an exciting prototype of what's to come.
