Battle of the smartphones
All year long device makers have been trying to steal the limelight from Apple's iPhone 3G. Research In Motion made waves with its touch-based BlackBerry Storm, made available from Verizon Wireless in November. Nokia, too, is looking to compete against the iPhone with its high-end N97 3G smartphone, which combines a touchscreen with a tilted 3.5-inch display and a full QWERTY keyboard -- but the N97 won't be available in the U.S. until after mid-2009. Meanwhile, T-Mobile's G1, unveiled in September, has the distinction of being the first smartphone to use Google's open-source Android mobile platform as its operating system.
