Encrypt Stored Files
By scrambling files so that they can only be deciphered with a password, encryption allows you to protect your data even when it's uploaded to someone else's far-away data center. Programs such as PGP or TrueCrypt, its open-source equivalent, both offer strong enough encryption that--so long as you use an uncrackable password--no one but you can gain access to your sensitive information.
