Who He Is: MIT professor and the inventor of the "Fab Lab."
What He's Doing: Selling a high-tech toolbox designed to create essentially any object. Typical kits include a laser cutter, computer-controlled saw, a miniature mill and a 3D printer, along with $10,000 worth of batteries and micro-controllers.
What He Wants You To Do: "Basically the goal is to create a Star Trek-style replicator in 20 years," Gershenfeld says.
What DIY Means To Him: "If anyone can make anything, anywhere," Gershenfeld says, "it fundamentally changes the meaning of business."
