His rebellious period
"I was a pain in the ass," says Buffett. A 12-year-old Buffett moved with his family from
Omaha, Neb., to Washington, D.C., after his father was elected to Congress. The transition
was bumpy. "I fell in with bad people and did things I shouldn't have. I was just
rebelling," says Buffett. He performed poorly in school, ran away from home at one point and
was stealing sporting goods from the local Sears. His father, suspicious of the giant pile
of golf balls in his son's closet, told Buffett to straighten up or lose his paper route. It
was a threat that the business-minded Warren heeded.
