Mr Obama was frank about another claim on government largesse鈥擜merica's beleaguered carmakers. Asked if he supports a bail-out, he chided the "Big Three" (Chrysler, Ford and GM) for failing to make efficient and attractive cars. But he also stressed that carmaking is the "backbone" of the American manufacturing sector, and says that the firms cannot simply be allowed to fail.
