Get to Know the Stakeholders
Talking to your boss is important, but in these uncertain times, your boss might not have a job in a few months either. Introduce yourself to those who work in your department at the other company. You don't need to go behind your boss's back; instead, invite him or her. Ask how they do things and if there's anything you can do to help. Also, if they're forming committees to merge departments or technology, volunteer for them.
