Know your unemployment benefits
Currently, you get 26 weeks of benefits from your state. The federal government is now paying an extra 13 weeks after that--but authorization for that runs out in March 2009. The National Employment Law Project offers a comprehensive guide to benefits, including state-by-state details, at www.unemployedworkers.org. The guide also lists any special work training programs funded by the state that might be available.
