Some law firms will consider waiving some of their initial fees altogether if they believe a start-up has promise and could be a valued customer down the road. "Law firms in start-up hubs offer deferred-fee deals to the most promising start-ups," says Paul Graham, who helps launch dozens of companies each year through his outfit, YCombinator. "Typically you can use up to $25,000 worth of time and they won't bill you until you do a big funding round."
