Syed Mokhtar Albukhary Country: Malaysia Age: 56 Controls Malaysia Mining Corp. and holds big stakes in Johor Port and other businesses. Started the Albukhary Foundation鈥攁 Muslim charity that assists the needy, regardless of color鈥攊n 1996 and he is the only donor. Gave it $30 million in 2006 and $25 million last year. Foundation funds remedial classes in English, science and math for 20,000 underachieving students from poor rural families each year. Hopes the extra schoolwork "will help bridge the educational divide between the rich and poor." Foundation also runs a college scholarship program for 300 students from more than 40 countries.
