FAA probes American Air over maintenance - WSJ

NEW YORK, July 31 - Federal aviation regulators are investigating whether American Airlines <AMR.N> failed to promptly alert them about potential safety problems affecting the aluminium skins of some Boeing 737 jets, the Wall Street Journal reported on its website, citing people familiar with the details.

Since a first incident was detected in February, at least four planes have needed repairs, the paper said.

The FAA, among other things, wants to determine why the carrier waited months to alert the agency, it said.

American Airlines was not immediately available to comment.
