JAL Cargo is the brand of Japan Airline group's freight service. JAL is a member of the WOW Alliance on cargo. In the fiscal year ended on 31 March 2006, domestically it carried 338,443 paid tonne-kilometres (tkm) of freight and 85,519 tkm of airmail. Internationally it carried 4,541,293 paid tkm of freight and 161,690 tkm of airmail.
The first JAL cargo flight (DC-4), started service on the Tokyo/San Francisco route on May 2, 1959. JAL introduced a system of internal companies for its cargo business in 2000. In April 2004, another major internal restructuring took place with Japan Airlines becoming Japan Airlines International Co. Ltd., responsible for international air transport business - and Japan Air System becoming Japan Airlines Domestic Co. Ltd., handling domestic air transport operations. In 2006 Japan Airlines International and Japan Airlines Domestic were unified into one company, Japan Airlines International.
