Serve the Society with Textile and Apparel Specialty

Making a specialty of textile and apparel, Wuhan University of Science and Engineering  (WUSE), besides the traditional specialty, such as literature, natural science, engineering, education, economics, law  and management, has  formed  an optimized disciplinary  system  consisting of  textile machinery, apparel  fabrics,  textile  dyeing,  printing  and  finishing  engineering,  apparel  design  and manufacture, textile trade, logistics and management. Furthermore, the artistic design discipline has been authorized as a national key provincial specialty, and the fashion design discipline has been ranking the frst place among other Chinese universities for nine years continuously.

Moreover,  the  university  also  has  nine  provincial  and ministerial  level  key  disciplines,  two  key provincial  laboratories and seven provincial engineering  research centers. With  increasingly  investment into  scientific  research,  the  university  has made  remarkable  achievements  in  promoting  the  ability of  self-innovation.The  research  and  development  on new type textile fabric material,  digitalized textile  equipment, waste water  treatment  technology,  clothing  digital  technology,  information-based  textile  production  have  already met  the  international  level  and  outstood  among  other  textile specialized  universities:  the  independently  developed  new  type  of waste water  treatment  technology and  equipment  and  the  textiles  smart  pattern making  system  have  been  selected  into  the  catalog of  the  ‘11th  Five-Year-Plan'  textile  industrial  application  technology  program;  the  newly-developed polypropylene acidic pulp  for superfne pure cotton warp yarn dressing  realizes  the effective control of the glass-transition temperature and the viscosity force of moisture absorption, which could increase the production effciency of weaving machine and lower the cost of sizing.

The establishment of high-level subjects also contribute to the achievement of personnel training. To date, in each National University Artistic Design Competition and Papers Competition, 78 individual awards have been achieved by the teachers and students from WUSE; in 2008 China International Fashion Design Contest, WUSE gained the fnal gold medal in the part of Children's Wear Design Competition.  Recently, as the result of the Arts of Fashion  International Competition 2008 has been unfolded, Yi-Fei Sun,  the  student  from WUSE,  entered  the  final  competition with  her work  of WHY NOT, and  becomes  the  only  competitor  from  the Chinese mainland  in  such  an  international well-known competition. 
  
Scientifc and technical achievement Oriented with  the market  demand  and  trend,  utilizing  the  advantage  of  the  characteristic  subjects, WUSE  formed  a  talent  resource  system: make  the  application  research  as  the main  task,  strengthen  the communication and relationship with enterprises, and adopt various mode integrating production, studying and research together, aiming to serve the society with the scientifc and technical achievement and promote socialand industrial development.

WUSE  emphasizes  the  communication  and cooperation with  enterprises,  integrating  the  advantages and beneft of university and enterprises comprehensively.
 
In  2007,  the University,  united with Huayin Group  and Honland Holding Co.,  Ltd,  established Hubei Xinnong Ramie  Ltd,  and  founded  a  'Ramie Eco-industrial Sample park'  in  the  city  of Xianning,  in Hubei Province. Being an  environmental-protection  sample  project,  in  this eco-industrial  park,  a  complete  ramie  industrial  cycle chain,  ranging  from  the  plant  to  the  process,  has  been established: mechanization production  takes  the place of traditional planting methods;  the wasted stalk during  the process  of  initial  processing  are  produced  into  fertilizer for  edible  fungus;  the  leaf  of  ramie  are  changed  into green feed; the waste after the treatment of the pollution could  also  be  used  to  feed  the  ramie. According  to  the experts,  this  project  could  solve  the  pollution  caused by the  traditional  ramie  degumming  techniques,  and  the problems  emerging  during  the  process  of  large-scaled plant and  harvest  completely.  It  is  estimated  that  the annual production of clean  ramie could  reach 1,000  tons, with a proft of 50 million Yuan
           
A  research  team,  led by Vice-President Prof. Zeng Qingfu,  developed  the microwave  infnite UV  catalytic oxidation  technology,  creating  a  high-temperature treatment and recycle technology for the textile printing and  dyeing waste-water  for  the  frst  time,  so  that  the recovery rate of the wastewater could reach 90%, and the water-saving  rate  could  be  up  to  90  percent.  It  is predicted  that  if  the  technology  could  be  promoted and popularized  in printing and dyeing enterprises,  theenergy-saving and emission reduction index for Chinesetextile  dyeing  and  printing  industry  can  be  achieved easily and earlier.

International cooperation

WUSE is active in setting up international academic exchanges and co-operation. It has established relations with around ten foreign universities, research institutes and  companies  in US, Britain, Russia  and  so  on:  co-cultivates  doctorate  students with Russian  Ivanovo State  Textile Academy;  co-researches with University of  Leeds  in Britain  and Deakin University  in Australia; runs  joint-venture  schools with University  of  Leeds, Australian Holmes-glen Institute of TAFE and Singapore Raffes Designing  school,  and  establishes  a China-EU international professional training centre.

A  number  of  visiting  experts  and  professors  have been  invited  to WUSE,  bringing  their  new  theory, and  new  knowledge  into  the  teaching  and R&D. Furthermore,  groups  of  teachers  from  the University would  be  selected  to  go  abroad  and  do  research  in overseas famous universities and research  institutions, which would be benefcial to create more opportunities to communicate and cooperate with  international frst-class  experts,  and  improve  the  self-research  ability  to strengthen discipline construction in University.

Mr. Shang Gang,  the General  of CPC  of WUSE, pointed  out:  "neither  the  scale  nor  the  level  could decide whether  a University  could win  the  initiative during  the  competition,  the  key  for  the  long-term and  sustainable  development lies  on  the  education quality  and  specialty." WUSE would,  on  the  basis  of the  advantage  of  textile  and  apparel  specialty, make effort to promote the economic development in CentralChina, and serve the social and industrial development.
