Twitter launches mobile version in Japan

Published: 16 Oct 2009 01:02:01 PST

Microblogging site Twitter has launched a mobile version in Japan Thursday to expand its online service where other social networking sites, including Facebook and MySpace have failed to gain much ground.

So far, Japanese is Twitter's sole foreign language platform. The company will develop the site in Spanish, German, French and Italian in the next few months, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said.

The interface isn' t simply a translation of the Twitter user interface (UI) into Japanese; it' s used as a test model for Twitter to see how audiences react to the idea of ads being placed on Twitter.

"It's an excellent opportunity for us to see where we can go in Asia in general because Japan represents a leading edge, with advanced mobile usage," said Stone. "Mobile is in Twitter's DNA."
