Siemens a Major Partner at APEC CEO Summit 2009; Will Launch Global Sustainability Survey at the Summit

Singapore, Oct 12, 2009 - ( ACN Newswire ) - Siemens, the global powerhouse in electronics and electrical engineering, reinforces its leadership and commitment to sustainable development through the launch of a worldwide poll of international sustainability experts. This landmark survey by global research firm GlobeScan Incorporated will examine the policy issues surrounding sustainability in the context of the global economic crisis. The findings will be announced at the APEC CEO Summit in Singapore next month. Siemens is a major partner of the Summit and will share its experience and expertise in the subject of sustainable development at the event.

Titled "The Economic Crisis and Sustainable Development", the study will provide relevant and timely information on sustainability issues and their impact on the economy, both globally and regionally.

"Sustainability is not just an ecological issue, it is an economic and social one, too", said Peter Loescher, President and CEO of Siemens AG. "Actions aimed at short-term gains do not create long-term value. And while the effects of the crisis may be with us for some time, the effects of megatrends like climate change, urbanization or demographic change will be with us for our entire future."

For the survey, sustainability issues experts worldwide, including senior officials in government, business leaders, scientists, academics and civil society leaders spread across more than 80 countries, will comment on a range of policy issues relating to the interdependence of the economy and sustainable development, with particular focus on the Green Industrial Revolution.

"The economic downturn and the climate change challenge together present an opportunity for businesses to carve out new sources of competitive advantage and market leadership. This research will allow the greater business community to leverage the insights from sustainable development experts when developing strategies to meet these challenges," said Rob Kerr, Vice President at GlobeScan.

Siemens products and solutions are aimed at providing the answers to the world's toughest questions, with almost 25 per cent or Eu19 billion of the company's revenues coming from environmental technologies. Its efforts in this area have been rewarded with top rankings in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI), the first global index tracking the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. It earned perfect scores in compliance and risk management and captured the top spot in the Diversified Industrials sector for the second time in a row this year.

During next month's APEC CEO Summit from 12-14 November, Loescher will be participating in a dialogue on "Anticipating the Future: The Shape of Things to Come", sharing a distinguished panel with Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore's Minister of Community Development, Youth and Sports; Rex W. Tillerson, Chairman and CEO, Exxon Mobil; and Anand G. Mahindra, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Mahindra&Mahindra Ltd, among others. The discussion will focus on the economic challenges, as well as issues on the environment, energy, politics, culture and technology.

Siemens will also host a high-level dinner during the Summit, with the theme "Meeting the Challenge of Sustainable Development: Are There Trade-Offs with Economic Growth? What Role Does Technology Have to Play?". Tim Flannery, Chairman of the Copenhagen Climate Council, will be giving a keynote address at this dinner, followed by a panel discussion with Barbara Kux, Chief Sustainability Officer of Siemens AG and John Watson, Vice Chairman of Chevron.
