Aug. 25, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Xinhua News Agency, the official press agency of the Chinese government, recently signed strategic cooperation agreements with China Telecom Corp Ltd<0728> and China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd<600050><0762> on 3G services, sources reported.

Under the agreement with China Telecom, Xinhua News Agency will launch a TV channel in Shanghai on the 3G platform provided by e-Surfing, a subsidiary of the telecom carrier. The new mobile TV service will enable residents in Shanghai to watch live news broadcasting from Xinhua.

In addition, Xinhua News Agency and China Unicom have teamed up to provide 3G services during the Shanghai 2010 World Expo. China Unicom's Shanghai branch will offer advanced 3G technology to assist the news agency to report on the event.

Xinhua News Agency is the biggest center for information collecting and press conferences in the country. It has more than 10,000 employees, as compared to about 1,300 employed by Reuters, and 107 bureaus worldwide that both collect information on other countries and dispense information about China.
