August 26 MetalBiz--India's Essar Steel plans to increase the production of its steel firm, Algoma Steel in Canada, to 5mln tons from the original 4mln tons.
In 2007, Essar purchased Algoma Steel, headquartered in Ontario Province, and Essar announced that its production capacity would climb to 4mln tons from 2.4mln tons, the capacity expansion of 4mln-ton-a-year will be completed by the end of 2009 fiscal year, besides, the further 1mln-ton capacity expansion has been launched. The products of this company will be left unchange, and the company will continue producing the high-end plate products.
At present, Algoma Steel's yearly production capacity is around 3mln tons, after the extension, steel mill will provide more job opportunities. In May 2009, Algoma Steel sharply cut staff when reducing 50% of the production, and now the laid-off employees have returned to their positions.
