German crude steel production sank 53% in April May 13 MetalBiz--According to Germany Federal Statistical Office, the crude steel production of German steel mills was down 53.1% to 1.88mln tons in April 2009 compared with the same period of last year. And the pig iron production declined 56.8% to 1.06mln tons in the same period.

It was said that such a disastrous drop hasn't happened since the federal republic was founded in 1949.

The major reasons are the dramatic decline in the auto and manufacturing industries caused by the global financial crisis.
