SEOUL, Sept 14 - The South Korean won steadied against the dollar after hitting its strongest in almost six weeks early on Monday amid persistent caution over possible dollar-buying intervention by the foreign exchange authorities.

The won was quoted at 1,221.6/2.0 per dollar as of 0010 GMT, compared with Friday's domestic close of 1,221.8.

The local currency strengthened to as firm as 1,217.9, the strongest since Aug. 5.

Seoul shares edged down while foreign investors bought a net 1.5 billion won worth of stocks on the main exchange.
