NEW YORK, July 31 - The euro extended gains versus the dollar on Friday after data showed business activity in the U.S. Midwest rose in July to its best showing since last September, boosting risk appetite.

Gains in the U.S. stock market also helped lift sentiment.

The euro rose as high as $1.4154, according to Reuters data, and was last up 0.5 percent at $1.4137.

The National Association of Purchasing Management-Chicago business barometer rose to 43.4 from 39.9 in June. Economists polled by Reuters had expected a reading of 43.0. A reading above 50 indicates expansion.
