CHICAGO, Oct 23 - No. 1 U.S. railroad Union Pacific Corp said on Thursday that fourth-quarter freight volumes will be down around 5 percent from a year before.

In a presentation for analysts posted on its website, the Omaha, Nebraska-based railroad said it expects freight volumes in 2009 to be flat to down 2 percent, but said its pricing should remain strong, with rate hikes of between 5 and 6 percent.

Union Pacific said it expects the U.S. automotive and construction sectors to remain soft in 2009, but its energy-related markets should stay strong.
