German Navy Ship Foils Pirate Hijack Attempt Off Somalia -BBC

A German navy ship foiled an attempt by pirates to hijack an Egyptian cargo vessel off Somalia, the BBC reported, citing unnamed officials.

Sailors from the frigate Karlsruhe captured six Somali pirates, but immediately released them under orders from the German government, the BBC reported Thursday on its Web site.

The Karlsruhe used a helicopter and small boats to protect the Egyptian ship from the pirates, who had shot and wounded one of the cargo craft's crew when they tried to board it, the BBC said, citing a German navy spokesman in Djibouti.

Germany would only bring pirates to justice if its own interests were harmed, the BBC cited Cmdr. Achim Winkler, a spokesman for the E.U. mission off Somalia, as saying.
