ROME -- Italy is aiming to boost its economic ties with Syria by consolidating its business investments in the Middle Eastern country, Italian Industry Minister Claudio Scajola said.
"Italy is closely following the opening up of Syria's markets and its international trade, which has led our country to become Damascus' first European economic partner," Scajola said in a statement.
Trade between Italy and Syria rose to EUR1.87 billion in 2007, up 35% from the previous year. In the first half of 2008, it rose by a further 13%, the ministry said, without providing an absolute figure.
Scajola met with Syrian Deputy Premier for Economic Affairs Abdallah Dardari, and the country's Industry Minister Fuad Issa Al Jouni earlier Wednesday.
