China Jan power consumption up 30 pct y/y -report

BEIJING, Jan 27 - China's power consumption in January is on track for a record rise of more than 30 percent from a year earlier, an unidentified source from the country's leading power grid operator was quoted as saying on Wednesday.

The official from State Grid Corp of China said that power consumption was up more than 30 percent in both the early and middle parts of January, the China Securities Journal reported.

The State Electricity Regulatory Commission forecast earlier this month that China's total power consumption in 2010 would rise 7 percent from 2009.

Total power demand in 2009 grew about 6 percent, rising strongly in the second half of the year after the financial crisis had weighed on consumption in the first half.
