Recommendation
Since January 1st, 1997, it is compulsory to stick a road tax disc on the windscreen that you can buy at the border in order to be able to drive on highways. It is therefore advised to get it either when crossing the border or at the first highway exit. The road police have no mercy for the offenders and strongly fine them. The car or some of its contents (the car stereo for example) can be retained as a guarantee in case you ask for a deferred payment.

Culinary specialties
The Viennese cooking is strongly influenced by Czech, Hungarian, and even Baltic cookery. There is a wide range of specialities with various flavours. The various provinces managed to preserve their culinary patrimony. This way, regional specialities can be found in all hotels and restaurants.
Austrian gastronomy is famous for its cakes (Sacher Torte), its excellent cooked pork meats and its famous white wines (côteaux of Lower Austria, Styria and Burgenland).
