Recommendation
Since January 1st, 1997, it is compulsory to stick a road tax disc on the windscreen that you can buy at the border in order to be able to drive on highways. It is therefore advised to get it either when crossing the border or at the first highway exit. The road police have no mercy for the offenders and strongly fine them. The car or some of its contents (the car stereo for example) can be retained as a guarantee in case you ask for a deferred payment.
