China's White Rabbit Candy back in domestic market

Oct. 16, 2008 (China Knowledge) - White Rabbit Milk Candy, the popular sweet brand in China, announced its products will return to the domestic market within the next few days, according to its maker Shanghai Guanshengyuan Co on Tuesday.

The candies have passed the relevant quality supervision administration tests and will put on green label on the packing to show the product is free of melamine, the chemical known as the cause of kidney disease in the recent milk scandal.

Last month, Guanshengyuan recalled all its sweets exported, some of which were found to contain melamine. Domestic sales of the candy were halted on Sept. 26.

The candies are scheduled to return to Shanghai market as early as today, said Wen Mao, general manager of Guan Sheng Yuan, and all the melamine-free candies will supply other parts of China later.

The Shanghai-based company vows to send inspectors to raw material suppliers to enhance quality supervision and conduct tests against melamine on the candy.

It is also considering setting up its own milk powder base, which is an important ingredient of the candy, according to Wen.

White Rabbit candy, first rolled out in 1959, was awarded Chinese "laozihao," or time-honored labels, and is sold to more than 50 countries and regions.
