Guatemala Leader Departs For Taiwan Visit

Published: 06 Oct 2008 23:00:21 PST

GUATEMALA CITY (AFP)--Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom left Monday on an official visit to Taiwan, where he was expected to sign cooperation and development deals for the Central American nation.

Colom said he would seek support for Guatemala's security, rural development and infrastructure and meet with business leaders during the visit, in comments to journalists on his departure.

Colom was due to meet Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou, receive an honorary doctorate, visit a vehicle plant and celebrate Taiwan's national day Friday, before departing Sunday.

Guatemala is one of 23 nations that recognize Taiwan rather than China, from which the island split in 1949 after a civil war.

Taiwan and China have in the past used generous financial packages to ensure the loyalty of governments, especially in Africa, Latin America and the Pacific.
