* Gardasil is safe, effective for boys, men-FDA panel
* FDA will consider recommendations
GAITHERSBURG, Md., Sept 9 - Merck & Co's <MRK.N> cervical cancer vaccine is safe and effective for preventing genital warts in males ages 9 to 26, a U.S. advisory panel said on Wednesday.
The Gardasil vaccine has already been approved for girls and young women to prevent infection with the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes cervical cancer and genital warts.
A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel voted 7-1 that Gardasil was safe for males. Seven panelists also said Merck's data showed the shot was effective, with one panel member abstaining from a vote.
Merck shares closed up 58 cents at $31.55 on Wednesday.
