Aug. 14, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Kiehl's, a premium American cosmetics brand retailer, will officially open its first Shanghai outlet on Aug. 28, the Shanghai Daily reported earlier today. For the last two weeks, the company has been providing consultation services and sample tests at the new store, which is located in Westgate Mall. Kiehl's recently-launched Beijing store racked up sales of RMB 200,000 on the first day alone and sold out of the company's major products within a week. The popularity of the products was far beyond the company's expectations, said Joanna Lee, brand director of Kiehl's. Medicinal beauty and skin-care products account for less than 10% of China's RMB 100-billion cosmetics market, as compared to 60% in the Western world. However, annual sales in the Chinese market have grown by 18% per year on average in the past decade. Industry analysts have said that beauty and skin-care products have a bright future in China as the products are effective in preventing skin problems such as allergy and hair problems.
