Chandigarh-based NGO, International Society for Cooperation and Development (ISCD), has invited a research team from South Korea to produce eco-friendly polythene bags in India. This team has manufactured bags from corn.
Made from polylactides, these bags look and feel just like regular plastics and polyethlyene but they are 100 per cent biodegradable and compostable. These can also be used for making cups, cutlery, food containers, trash and carry bags.
The team plans to seek the government's approval and after getting clearance, start their commercial business in the next six months. Initially, the raw material will be imported from South Korea, but at a later stage, a raw material manufacturing unit will be also set up in India. The ISCD has taken up the responsibility to market this polymer in India and soon start its production.
