About 4,000 employees of General Motors Corp. will lose their jobs by October 1.

GM emailed more than 27,000 American white-collar workers Tuesday, notifying them that employees near retirement age will have the opportunity to retire early, GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson said.

Workers who agree to leave GM early will get standard severance packages of two weeks' pay for every year of service, up to six months of pay, Wilkinson said.

These employees have been told to reply to the latest offer by August 3. The company plans to finalize who will be cut by October 1, he said.

According to the company website, GM currently employs 244,500 people in every major region in the world. So far this year, GM already has cut more than 2,000 workers.
