Hang Seng Index up 1.76% on Wed

Nov. 4, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Hong Kong stocks rose on Wednesday. The Hang Seng Index, the benchmark, opened 156 points higher at 21,396. After touching the intraday low of 21,360.66 points, the blue-chip Hang Seng Index rose 374.71 points or 1.76% to close at 21,614.77.

Mainboard turnover rose to HK$60.06 billion. 

The Hang Seng China Enterprise Index, which tracks the overall performance of 43 Chinese mainland state-owned enterprises on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, swelled 329.51 points or 2.64% to 12,830.15 points.

Market heavyweight HSBC Holdings Plc<0005><HBC>, which accounts for the largest weighting for the Hang Seng Index, climbed 0.18% to HK$85.85.

Playmates Toys Ltd<0869> skyrocketed 81.84% to HK$0.98 after it agreed to issue US$30 million in convertible bonds to parent Playmates Holdings Ltd<0635>. New World Mobile Holdings Ltd<0862> surged 38.11% to HK$6.56. Jingwei Textile Machinery Co Ltd<000666><0350> declined 14.89% to HK$2.

Auto firms showed good performances. Denway Motors Ltd<0203> rose 7.18% to HK$4.18. Great Wall Motor Co Ltd<2333> swelled 2.54% to HK$8.89. Dongfeng Motor Group Co Ltd<0489> increased 12.49% to HK$10.54. Sinotruk (Hong Kong) Ltd<3808> increased 1.61% to HK$9.46. BYD Co Ltd<1211> swelled 2.17% to HK$73.1.

Stocks of airline firms ended mixed. Air China Ltd<601111><0753> fell 0.23% to HK$4.31. China Eastern Airlines Co Ltd<600115><0670><CEA> went up 1.44% and closed at HK$2.12. China Southern Airlines Ltd<600029><1055><ZNH> slid 1.32% to HK$2.24. Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd<0293> climbed 0.97% to HK$12.44.
