Shanghai initiates land expropriation for Disney Park project

Published: 03 Nov 2009 00:02:01 PST

As Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng said Monday the government will reveal the latest developments related to the Disney Theme Park, the Shanghai Pudong New Area has started land expropriation work for the project.

According to the latest notice released by the government, this expropriation work involves an area of about 6,134 mu (about 4,089,435 square meters).

"The first-phase of the project will be in the South of Huanglou Area, an area in Chuansha Town, the southeast suburbs of Shanghai's Pudong area; and the second phase will be extended further southwest," said an unnamed urban development expert from Shanghai.

But according to the Shanghai Securities News, the land expropriation notice was put on the website of Shanghai government as early as September, saying that Shanghai government was expropriating an area for a project named "Buena project", but the Shanghai Securities News found out that the expropriation area for the "Buena project" was basically the same as the area of the expropriation land for the Disney project; the so-called "Buena project" was just a code name for the Disney project.

Other documents from the city show that as early as 2006, the Chuansha government in Pudong has submitted a plan to apply for a land expropriation of about 500 hectares for a theme park named "Buenaland Shanghai".

The area for the first-phase of the "Buenaland Shanghai" is the same as the one the Shanghai Pudong New Area has expropriated for the Disney project. A source close to the matter disclosed that since the Disney project was waiting for approval then, the land applied for in 2006 was actually reserved for this Disney project.

The unnamed source also said the name of "Buena" has meanings related to Disney, as "Buena" often appears on the list of Disney's subsidiaries or departments like BuenaVista Music Group, and sometimes "Buena" is used to name some projects.

An analyst who declined to be named said the deadline for registration for compensation was in two weeks, a very short period of time compared previous cases; this shows the government has made full preparation for further progress like removal and rebuilding.

Experts predicted the first-phase of the Disney project will begin in a year later if things run smoothly.
