Oct. 30, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Nokia Corp, the world's largest handset manufacturer, Tuesday unveiled its first handset based on China's home-grown TD-SCDMA technology in its Beijing product development center.

The new 3G handset, called the Nokia 6788, is equipped with a 5-megapixel camera with a dual-LED flash, a 2.8-inch display and Nokia's Symbian S60 platform. The handset is customized for high-end users who are signed up with China Mobile Ltd<0941><CHL>, the country's largest telecom carrier.

The handset will be available by the end of this year, but the price has not been set yet, said Nokia.

So far, Nokia has launched 16 3G handset models in China, the biggest handset market by users, and has sold at least 200 million mobile phones in the country. The handset maker said it would continue to expand its 3G product line in China next year.

China Mobile was granted a license to offer 3G service based on the TD-SCDMA technology in January. The company has teamed up with 26 handset makers and developed more than 60 TD-SCDMA models.
