Oct. 29, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Chunghwa Telecom Co Ltd, the largest telecom and Internet services provider in Taiwan, is evaluating investment opportunities in Taiwan and overseas, President Shaio-tung Chang said yesterday, Dow Jones Newswires reported.

The telecom carrier is watching the market closely and is seeking investment opportunities, said Chang. However, he did not comment on the report that the company may buy into Asia Pacific Telecom Group, a major telecom service provider in Taiwan.

The Commercial Times Tuesday reported that Minister of Transportation and Communications Mao Chi-Kuo said that Chunghwa Telecom is considering buying a stake in Asia Pacific Telecom.

The newspaper citied unnamed sources saying that Chunghwa Telecom plans to spend about NT$10 billion to buy a stake in Asia Pacific Telecom.

Currently, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications is the largest shareholder of Asia Pacific Telecom, holding a 35.3 stake in the company.
