The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index on the Shanghai Stock Exchange closed at 3,109.57 points on Monday, up 1.72 points, or 0.06 percent, from the previous close.

The Shenzhen Component Index on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange closed at 12,815.26 points on the same day, down 27.95 points, or 0.22 percent, from the previous close.

The Shanghai index went up a little after opening in the morning but came down at midday. Nonferrous metals and steels rose but that did not stop the overall downward trend in the afternoon.

Banking and real estate failed to live up to their impressive performance last week.

The Hushen 300 Index, which reflects the performance of both of China's two major stock exchanges, Shanghai and Shenzhen, closed at 3,414.24 points on Monday, up 0.99 points, or 0.03 percent, from the previous close.

About one fifth of the total stocks listed on the two markets are chosen as samples of the Hushen 300 Index. They account for 60 percent of the market value in China's stock market.

China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines gained more than 1 percent. PetroChina fell 0.8 percent.
