Oct. 19, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Taiwan-based Acer Inc, the world's third-largest PC brand, saw global PC shipments grow 25.6% year on year to 10.96 million units in the third quarter of this year and ranked second after PC brand HP, which shipped 15.79 million PCs, according to statistics recently released by research firm Interactive Data Corp.

Acer surpassed Dell in terms of third quarter PC shipments, as the latter shipped 9.95 million PCs globally during the period, 8.4% fewer than in the same period of last year, while Lenovo Group Ltd<0992> took fourth place, shipping nearly 6.99 million PCs.

IDC's statistics show that HP accounted for 20.2% of Q3 global PC shipments, while Acer accounted for 14%. PC makers Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba accounted for 12.7%, 8.9% and 5.2%, respectively.

Global PC shipments in Q3 2009 were 7.81 million units, up 2.3% year on year, due to an increase in shipments of notebook PCs and netbooks.

The global PC market is recovering before the launch of the new operating system, Windows 7, according to IDC. Moreover, the growth trend is likely to continue through the fourth quarter of this year and into next year.

Acer earlier this week predicted that it would record NT$167 billion of total revenue in the third quarter of this year, 40% more than in the second quarter. Its net profit may increase 50% quarter on quarter to NT$3.45 billion in Q3.
