Oct. 12, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Taiwan-based Acer Inc, the world's third-largest PC maker, has no plans to open a notebook plant in Brazil, said company spokesman Wang Tao-hsiung, sources reported.

Wang was responding to a rumor that Acer had reached a sales agreement with Ingram Micro to re-enter the Brazilian market after a 15-year absence.

He said that although he thinks Acer could set up a desktop PC plant in Brazil, it has no plans to do so, and that a notebook plant is even less likely.

Some experts have said there is little possibility Acer will set up a plant in Brazil because its OEM business has been split off from the brand.

Moreover, the Brazilian government has cut tariffs on information products and provided incentive policies to retailers. Acer will no longer have to ship its PC products via Paraguay keep prices low in Brazil.

The Taiwanese firm shipped 8.2 million PCs in the second quarter of this year, 23.3% more than in the corresponding period of last year. It predicted that notebook shipments will increase between 35% and 40% in the third quarter.
