Sep. 28, 2009 (China Knowledge) - The Beijing Economic-technological Development Area, or BDA, last week started construction on the Bio-pharmaceutical Industrial Park, which will help BDA complete its bio-medicine industrial chain. The Bio-pharmaceutical Industrial Park, which will cover an area of 86,000 square meters and has a potential floor area of 160,000 square meters, will provide a shared platform to support the R&D activities of the pharmaceutical enterprises, and help them, especially those small- and medium-sized enterprises to cut cost. The move will also attract those returned overseas Chinese students specializing in the field to start their business in the park, according to BDA's statement. Around 100 companies and outsourcing service providers engaged in pharmaceutical innovation are expected to set up their presence in the park. The biological engineering and new medical industry in the BDA has become one of the leading industries in the region and played a significant role in the capital's economic development. Statistics showed that enterprises in the biological engineering and new medical industry in the development area realized RMB 12.94 billion in combined sales revenue last year, 13.3 times that of 2001. So far, Germany-based Bayer HealthCare LLC, France's Sanofi-Aventis and Japan's Daiichi have all established their operations in the BDA and are growing healthily.
