Toyota recalls record number of vehicles

Published: 24 Aug 2009 01:02:01 PST

Due to problems with its auto parts, Guangqi Toyota and FAW Toyota, two China-based joint ventures announced Sunday they are recalling 688,314 units of the Corolla, Camry, Vios, and Yaris.

There are defects in some auto parts the two companies purchased from a supplier, which may lead to short circuits, melting loss, or weight loss due to oxidation, windows malfunctioning or other problems. Toyota’s recall in China is now considered the largest one since the country brought this system into effect.

The vehicles to be called back include: 384,736 units of the Camry produced between May 15, 2006 and December 31, 2008; 22,767 units of the Yaris produced between May 15, 2008 and December 31, 2008; 35,523 units of the Vios produced between February 18, 2008 and December 25, 2008; and 245,288 units of the Corolla produced between May 17, 2007 and December 25, 2008.

These two companies have both promised to replace the defective spare parts. Customers may call Guangqi Toyota at 800-830-8888 or 400-830-8888, and FAW Toyota at 800-810-1210 or 010-64629300.
