Jul. 14, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Flextronics International Ltd (Flextronics), one of the world's leading electronics manufacturing services providers, yesterday announced that it will set up a notebook research and design center in Banciao, Taipei City, sources reported.

The Banciao Computing Segment Design Center, which will recruit 1,500 engineers within the next few years, is expected to help design notebook computers for brand names such as Hewlett-Packard and Dell, in collaboration with Flextronics' two similar centers on the island.

The move is in line with Flextronics' efforts to enhance its R&D capabilities. The Singapore-based electronics manufacturer absorbed 600 R&D employees when it spent US$192 million to buy PC business division of Arima Computer in Taiwan. The acquisition was completed last year.

Moreover, Flextronics will still manufacture laptops in its factories in China.

Flextronics's notebook PC shipment and revenue will see a year-on-year double-digit increase in 2010, said Sean Burke, president of Flextronics' computing segment, adding that the firm is providing integrated services to the industry giants.

Flextronics has manufacturing factories in more than 30 countries and plans to increase its notebook PC capacity this year to 20 million units annually from the current 8 million to 10 million now.
