China removes anti-dumping tariff on imported newsprint paper

Jul. 1, 2009 (China Knowledge) - China eliminated an anti-dumping tariff on newsprint paper imports from the U.S., Canada and South Korea on Jun. 30, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said.

The removal marks an end to anti-dumping duties that China imposed a decade ago on the three countries. It also suggests that China's newsprint paper industry has prospered and is now able to compete with foreign companies.

The MOC published a bulletin on Dec. 31, 2008 announcing plans to lift the anti-dumping tariff in mid-2009, stipulating that natural persons, legal representatives and relevant organizations should submit applications for their final checks 60 days before the end of June.

China imposed a tariff of up to 78% on newsprint paper imports from the three countries in June 1998 to protect domestic enterprises. China's imports of newsprint paper then declined to 24,260 tons in 1999 and 20,000 tons in 2000.
