Jun. 18, 2009 (China Knowledge) - China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd<600050><0762><CHU>, the country's second largest telecom operator, on Tuesday signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with the Hainan provincial government to invest around RMB 3.6 billion within the next five years to improve the province's IT infrastructure.

Under the agreement, China Unicom will expand its 3G and broadband networks throughout the province.

In the meantime, the Hainan provincial government will offer full support to China Unicom's businesses on the island. It will encourage local firms to form industrial partnerships with the telecom operator and help the company offer comprehensive information services.

China Unicom's Hainan branch has already launched 3G commercial trial service in the province. It will focus on the broadband mobile Internet business and aim to speed up the IT development in the province this year.
