Jun. 18, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Taiwan-based Acer Inc, the world's third-largest PC brand, expects to become one of the five largest smartphone suppliers in the next three to four years, according to Aymar de Lencquesaing, president of Acer's Smart Handheld Business Group, at a press conference in Taipei on Tuesday.

De Lencquesaing noted that Acer needs to ship 20 million handsets in 2012, accounting for 6% or 7% of the global smartphone market, so as to reach the target.

In April, Acer launched its first smartphone that runs Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system. Meanwhile, The PC maker will launch one smartphone model this year running on Google's Android system. A total of 10 smartphone models will be launched by the Taiwanese company this year.

Acer hopes to sell its smartphones at lower prices by bundling them with services and subsidies provided by telecom operators. The smartphones will be available in Singapore in the first place through local telecom operators this month or the next month, said Roger Yuan, Acer's vice president.
