Jun. 15, 2009 (China Knowledge) - The Beijing Economic-technological Development Area (BDA) on Jun. 12 held a press conference to announce awards of RMB 110 million to 75 companies, including Baitai Biomedical Co Ltd and Golden Energy Fuel Cell Co Ltd, for 95 technology research projects.

The award money will drive an estimated RMB 1.48 billion in investment in research and development (R&D) to be conducted by those companies.

Baitai Biomedical was awarded RMB 8.6 million from BDA's special fund for technical innovation to help finance three projects. After eight years, the company has successfully established China's first platform for producing human antibodies and the first platform for large-scale culture of mammalian cells. The company also developed the first human monoclonal antibody drug, which is used in tumor therapy, breaking the monopoly of imported antibody drugs.

BDA, located in Beijing's e-Town (Yizhuang) area, has been growing for 17 years and currently hosts more than 2,600 enterprises. BDA's management wants to boost the development of its pillar industries, and attaches great importance to high-tech industries that can enhance its innovation capabilities.

BDA now has more than 300 technology R&D centers, and over 80% of the technological innovation projects have been put to use commercially. In 2008, enterprises in BDA applied for 796 patents, with invention patents accounting for 80.6% of the total, higher than the 41% in Beijing as well as the 33% national average.

On Jun. 12, BDA also launched a data service platform that provides services such as access to scientific data and scientific and technological journals and documents, intellectual property rights retrieval and analysis of competitive intelligence.

The platform is expected to optimize BDA's environment for innovation, help companies trim R&D costs, and improve the efficiency of innovation.
