China's industrial output rises 8.9% in May

Jun. 15, 2009 (China Knowledge) - China's industrial output climbed 8.9% year on year in May, 1.6 percentage points more than last month, according to statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Friday.

Heavy industrial output, which accounted for approximately 70% of the total industrial output, increased 8.6% from the previous year in May, 1.7 percentage points more than in April.

Textile output rose 8.3% in May, output of chemical materials and products increased 11.1%, and output of transportation equipment was up 12.8%.

Coal output increased 9.6% year on year to 250 million tons, while crude oil output amounted to 160.32 million tons, down 1.1% from a year earlier. Production of pig iron, crude steel and rolled steel were 454.26 million tons, 46.46 million tons and 572.91 million tons, down 6%, 0.6% and 7.4% respectively.

The sales ratio of industrial products was 97.34% in May, 0.49 percentage points lower than a year ago. Industrial enterprises realized a combined export value of RMB 581.36 billion, indicating a year-on-year decline of 15%.

In the first five months of this year, industrial output increased 6.3%, higher than the 5.5% in the first four months of this year.
