Jun. 3, 2009 (China Knowledge) - DOW Chemical Co, the third-largest chemical company in the world by market capitalization, yesterday launched its business and innovation complex for Asia Pacific, the Shanghai Dow Center, in Shanghai Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park. The Shanghai Dow Center, which covers a land area of more than 100,000 square meters, houses over 80 labs as well as the U.S. firm's regional headquarters for Asia Pacific and may employ up to 1,800 people. More than 500 engineers and scientists will work in the labs in the fields of construction, transportation, energy, water treatment, electronic equipment and personal care. DOW Chemical Chairman and CEO Andrew Liveris said that the opening of this new facility is in line with the firm's goal of being more market-focused and customer-oriented. The company regards China as a promising market despite the challenging economic situation, added Liveris. The company is currently cooperating with state-owned Shenhua Group, the biggest coal producer in China, to carry out a feasibility study on a multibillion-dollar coal-to-chemicals project in Shaanxi Province. The U.S.-based chemical manufacturer has expanded its business in China in the past ten years and made China its third largest market in the world. In 2008, its sales in the Chinese market reached US$3.3 billion, compared with its global sales of US$58 billion. Copyright © 2009 www.chinaknowledge.com |
