May. 28, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, the world's second largest handset manufacturer, plans to set up a module assembly plant for its LED TV business in Shenzhen City of South China's Guangdong Province, despite losses posted by the LCD panel manufacturers worldwide, sources reported. Last June, Samsung China President Keun-Hee Park said the company plans to invest around US$500 million in building a module assembly plant either in Guangzhou or Shenzhen. Last year, the Korean company teamed up with Shenzhen-listed TCL Corp<000100> and built a plant in Huizhou City of Guangdong Province, to manufacture LCD modules. The Huizhou plant is designed with a production capacity of over 8 million units upon the completion of the project. Samsung said it would mainly focus on sales of its LED TVs, which will be priced under US$1,000 per unit, by mid-2010. It is estimated that LED TV will take 8% of China's TV market in 2011, compared with 0.2% as of the end of 2008. Copyright © 2009 www.chinaknowledge.com |
