China Telecom in strategic partnership with VIA Technology

May 14, 2009 (China Knowledge) - China Telecom Corp Ltd<0728><CHA>, the nation's largest fixed-line operator, recently signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Taiwan-based electronics provider VIA Technology Inc to jointly boost the development of China's CDMA technology, sources reported.

Under the agreement, the two firms will embark on all-round cooperation in the fields of technology, R&D and industrial promotion of the CDMA industry to secure a larger share of the country's 3G market.

Working with VIA Technology, a global leading CDMA chip provider, will help China Telecom build a healthy and fast-developing CDMA industrial chain in China, said Yang Xiaowei, vice president of the Chinese telecom.

China Telecom was authorized to launch CDMA 3G services earlier this year. It aims to attract 35 million CDMA users in 2009 and to expand the number to 100 million next year, according to an earlier report.
