The total area of the four zones is 8 km2.

Shanghai Pudong Airport IZ is adjacent to Shanghai Pudong International Airport, one of China's busiest airports. In 2007, the airport handled 28.9 million passengers and 2.6 million tons of cargo and mail, ranking third and first in China by passenger throughput and cargo throughput respectively. Moreover, the zone is also close to Shanghai Port, one of the world's largest ports. The railway and highway networks in Shanghai connect the zone with other major domestic cities. The Beijing-Shanghai Railway, Shanghai-Wuhan Railway, Shanghai-Hangzhou Expressway and Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway run through Shanghai.

Shanghai has rich talent resources. There are 60 colleges and universities in the city, including Shanghai Tongji University, Shanghai Fudan University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In 2007, the number of college graduates rose 7.2% to 118,500.
